Description
Guided tour of the old centre of Ourense, discovering its monuments, surroundings and the most important buildings, with visit to the cathedral.
Located near the border with Portugal, the city of Ourense, is the great unknown of Galicia. Its old town and good atmosphere invite you to stroll through a pleasant environment whose charm is a surprise for the visitor.
Founded by the Romans, the city has developed around the hot springs and rivers that cross its valley, remaining from that time the well-known Roman bridge of Ourense. The thermal character of the city is undoubted, the large number of mineral-medicinal springs that sprout in the city give it the title of “Thermal Capital of Galicia”. Among the most notable monuments are the cloister of San Francisco, one of the best Gothic cloisters in Galicia, the churches of La Trinidad, Santo Domingo, San Francisco or Santa Eufemia, whose concave baroque façade does not leave you indifferent. It is worth mentioning very especially the cathedral of San Martin de Ourense. Fortified in appearance, it has been one of the city’s defensive buildings for centuries. The solidity of the building-fortress contrasts with the harmony and internal tranquility. Inside, the Pórtico del Paraíso, from the XIII century, of the few that conserve the polychrome in Spain; the exuberant baroque chapel of Santo Cristo; the dome, whose height contributes a certain slenderness to the ensemble and the Main Altarpiece, whose detail we owe to Cornelis de Hollanda’s workshop.
The combined visit of the city + cathedral is the best way for travelers to get to know Ourense and one of its most emblematic monuments. A visit made by professional Galician guides, which combines the monumental interest with an approach to the culture, anecdotes and local traditions of the city, framed in the destination Galicia.
