    Description

This region is one of the 5 D.O. Viticulturalists of Galicia, neighboring Las Médulas, a place exploited by its mining since ancient times. Here its slate terrain gives all the flavor to the wine. Whites and reds are made in underground cellars, following the ancient tradition introduced by the Romans. Valdeorras… the valley of gold, gold and slate wines!

Monuments, wine from the valley and mountains, forests, skiing and industrial heritage … In this wonderful area you will discover incredible castles, churches and sanctuaries, vestiges of the cultures and peoples that have passed through here: Romans, Germans, Arabs, pilgrims of the Camino de Invierno, kings and slaves.

Here we will find nature, heritage, gastronomy, deep-rooted traditions and the most authentic carnival, in short, this is… a place to rest and enjoy.

The area is located between Zamora and El Bierzo, it is a place of passage that has been defended to protect trade and travelers, as evidenced by the presence of remains of fortresses and towers. Ancient Roman roads and bridges, royal roads, pilgrimage routes to Santiago (Camino de Invierno) are preserved, but still today the modern highways, train tracks, make use of those passes between mountains.

This area of the interior of Galicia very well preserves its traditions and well live. The gastronomy is based on local mountain products such as honey, chestnuts, game meat or even olive oil produced in the valleys.

Geologically it is a place of great interest to know the formation of the earth in our area. It is also a good place for observation, birds, fauna or stars, A Veiga, near the mountain of Peña Trevinca, is a Starlight Destination ..

Industrial and mining activity is essential in this area, the Romans have mined gold, more recently there were Wolfram mines, although today mining is concentrated in slate extraction.

Its environment preserves several natural jewels, such as the Sierra de Enciña de Lastra Natural Park or the «Teixedal de Casaio», a yew forest unique in Europe and on our peninsula.

With Genuine Galicia, you will discover the richness of the valley and mountain culture.
